The purpose of the School Nurse in an educational setting is to promote the health and well-being of both students and staff. Components of nursing services include prevention, physical assessments and screenings; intervention, consultation, evaluation, education of students and staff about health related matters; collaboration with parents and appropriate community resources; and the implementation of health care policies and procedures. Effective July 1, 2006, a booster Tdap (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis) vaccine is required for all children entering the 6th grade, if at least five years have passed since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine. This documentation must be on file prior to the child enrolling in the 6th grade.
